Our top picks in the local area

For families

Children of all ages cannot fail to be thrilled by the collection on show at the magnificent Birmingham Railway Museum.  With locomotives, steam engines and other rolling stock plus the chance to experience a steam engine trip, this day out is fun for all the family.

For romance

Why not take a walk to the Tony Hancock Statue and have a laugh with a comic genius?  After all, love and laughter often walk hand in hand…….!  As one of Birmingham’s most famous sons, Tony Hancock died in 1968 and his influence in the world of comedy was far reaching, even touching modern comic acts.

For culture

The Hall of Memory is a reflective and sombre place and is a tribute to all those who have fallen in battle since World War I.  There is a book of remembrance filled with poignant memories and messages from past visitors, as well as some beautifully impressive stained glass windows.

For shopping

Wing Yip is a mega Chinese supermarket located just outside the city centre and for any foodie is a real must do.  Everything you could ever need to stock your store cupboards is available here – and then some!

For eating out

For first rate fish and chips, there is only one place to head to in Birmingham. The Great British Eatery knows how to do things right.  No bulk cooking of fish fillets which are then left to hang around in warm cabinet.  No, here the fillet is dipped in its sublime batter before your eyes and cooked in beef dripping before being served to you as it should be – fresh, hot and very, very tasty.

For nightlife

OK, this one is serious fans of all things retro.  The over 18’s only Roller Disco at the Tower Ballroom takes place on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month. It opens 9pm until late and with its licensed bar things are really taken up a notch.  So dust off your roller boots and head here for some serious fun, and possible injury! But hey – life is about taking risks!
