The Local Area

Within walking distance you arrive at the Museum Quarter and home to the famous Rijksmuseum, but in total Amsterdam is home to over fifty museums along with some fantastic monuments and sites.

Oude Kerk is an old church with small houses on the side. It is one of the best examples of Gothic architecture you will find in the area with its wonderful bell tower, which is believed was used to help sailors find their way.

Be sure to head down to Dom Square in the centre of Amsterdam. This is a historical site but also home to the Royal Palace. It is here you will find superb sculptures, beautiful architecture and you will be welcomed by hundreds of pigeons who have made the square their home.

Albert Cuyp market is where to go if you love shopping. It is the best known outdoor market in Europe with over three hundred stalls selling everything from fresh food to souvenirs. The market is surrounded by shops and cafés, you can sit and enjoy a coffee as you watch the shoppers bustle by.
