The Local Area

The local area will delight any art lover with the Prado Museum just a few steps away. This is the main Spanish national art museum and is home to the finest European art collection the world. The art dates back to the twelfth century up to the nineteenth century. Artwork by Velazquez and Francisco de Goya is what you can expect to find here. There are 7,600 paintings, 1,000 sculptures, 4,800 prints and 8,200 drawings for you to see.

From here you can stop in at the Centre de Art Reina Sofia, which is a collection of Spanish art from the twentieth century. Here you will see artwork by the famous Picasso. There is also a free access library at this gallery which is home to over one hundred thousand books, all dedicated to art.

Next is a stop at the Thyssen Bornemisza Museum, another art museum except this is a private art collection and is the second largest private art collection in the world. This art museum will fill any gaps from the Prado Museum. There are over 1,600 paintings here including artwork by Jan van Eyck, Vincent Van Gogh, Picasso, Rembrandt and Monet, just to name a few.

Once you have wondered around all the art museums and galleries you can head to the Plaza Mayor and see a beautiful plaza with magnificent architectural buildings and it’s stunning cobblestone which have seen their fair share of history.
